On July 4, 1884, the people of France gave to the United States as a symbol of friendship, a
statue sculptured by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. This statue was placed on an island in New
York Harbor. It is 46 meters high and was the first sight immigrants saw as they came into New
York City by ship. It is known as the Statue of Liberty. On the statue is a poem written by Emma
Lazarus. This poem sums up the American tradition of accepting people from other countries. It
reads as follows:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
